On a cold but dry December morning, the installation crew arrived to perform the actual installation. |
The truck arrived on time and was led in through the Fire-road access gate at the far end of the preserve. |
Luckily the ground was dry enough and the 4x4 truck with double rear axle had enough traction to be able to negotiate the hill and back up under the tree where the memorial was to be placed. |
Determining the exact spot and which way the plaque should face. |
The dimensions for the foundation are marked out and digging commences. |
Once a suitable hole has been created, we get ready to mix concretre and pour. |
Multiple barrow-loads are mixed and poured to form a really substantial foundation for the heavy rock that is to come. |
Next we get ready to move the rock with plaque. Luckily the truck has a crane which is erected on the rear bumper. |
The rock is lifted out on slings and manhandled into postion over the concrete. It is laid on a plank in preparation for intalling the rods (that go into holes drilled in the bottom of the rock and that will eventually sit in the concrete) and where fine adjustments in positioning can be made. |
A final positioning and angle check before the plank is removed and the rock (with its rebar underpinnings) is allowed to settle onto the concrete bed - it sinks in just enough to make sure it won't ever move. |
The concrete bed is tidied up where it interfaces with the rock. |
Now is not the time to find a typographical error... |
Loose dirt, that was originally taken from the hole for the foundation, is now replaced to hide the concrete plinth on which the rock is mounted. |

The installation crew heads home - mission accomplished. |
