These pictures were all taken in and around Los Altos Hills and Palo Alto - neighboring suburban environments in Silicon Valley.
The yellow "California Poppy" (seen in the first two pictures below) is the State flower and can be found in little clumps growing wild in many backyards or disused open spaces. The more traditional scarlet poppy, associated with Flanders and 11th November (Armistice Day or Veteran's Day depending on where you live) is not as common in these parts, but they are being encouraged to grow, mingled in with other wild flowers in a couple of spots. There is a particularly rich road-side patch just off the Stanford University campus, and a corner in Los Altos Hills where a lt of these pictures were taken, including some non-poppy species. |
