New England - Fall Color Trip 2013

At the end of our trip, we make our way to Easthampton to visit daughter Jane. After a side trip to Brattleboro we reluctantly head back to Boston to return the rent-a-car and catch the plane the next morning for San Francisco.

Easthampton, Montague and Brattleboro

Approaching Easthampton, another classic church. Located in a well-populated area, this one is more substantial and obviously serves a larger congregation.

On our way to lunch in Brattleboro, we stop to visit "The Book Mill" in Montague.

This is a large multi-story complex that used to be a mill, but is now anchored by a large second-hand bookstore and a terrace with a coffee shop. The books are housed in lots of smaller rooms connected by passageways, we can see the mill stream from a comfortable library chair strategically placed to encourage browsing in old books.

The mill stream passes below a terrace with tables and chairs, but today we have our first rain of the trip, and the terrace is deserted.

On to lunch in Brattleboro - a view of the river from the restaurant.

The view from our table...

... and the other end of the building, where the main road crosses the river. A drizzly mist covers the top of the hill.

This river has passed through a lot of woods and obviously accumulates a considerable amount of drift-wood as it does so.

Leaving Brattleboro.   Help!   Which way...?

Back in Easthampton where a flag hangs over the mill pond every summer.

Here too, the colors are out in full force.

A brief stop at daughter Jane's house before we brave the Toll Road to Boston and return the car before the flight home.
