Here are just a few more scenes which occurred as I stood at the edge of the road trying to look like a Eucalyptus tree...

6591 Because I was standing near the open gate that led into the orchard, I was unwittingly preventing some other deer from joining the main picnic - they didn't want to pass too close by me. So they watched me from a safe distance on the other side of the road opposite the entrance to the orchard - peering carefully over the embankment to see if I had gone and the coast was clear. |
6598 The main part of the family were picnicing on one side of the orchard all together, multiple does and fawns, all presided over by a single male. But elsewhere in the orchard were other deer (including a couple of males) who maintained a respectfull distance. This male appeared to have bigger antlers than the "father" in the main family, but it is hard to tell and may not be meaningfull anyway. |
6612 Here he moved up on to the crest of the hill |
6745 Elsewhere in the orchard, a young doe, isolated from the main family, scrunched on a fresh apricot |
6768 This was another "batchelorette" away from the main group who watched me calmly almost the whole time I was there without moving, totally unperturbed by my approaching the fence and steadying the camera on a fencepost pointing the big eye right at her. |
6886 Away from the main group were at least two more males seen here, as well as a couple more does. |
6824 The main group migrated up on to the skyline to continue their picnic. This part of the group consisted of a doe accompanying three new-borns (judging by their spotted coats) |
6855 Later on the buck joined them (on the right) - he had been laying down in the grass a little removed from the women and kids. |
6882 Here you can see the whole family group as it assembled in an open spot beside the orchard, just before dusk. |
